Money, Time, and the Parole Board(BUZZARDS) by Tim Brownell

Pretrial detention is unwarranted for large numbers of people. It impacts the quality of defenses to criminal charges because detained defendants are unable to participate in assisting their lawyers with investigations, locating witnesses, etc. Detention also causes the loss of employment and the destabilization of families – factors that can lead to criminal liability. Our objective is to reform pre-trial detention by eliminating cash bail and addressing legal system practices that contribute to higher incarceration rates. MI-CEMI, under the leadership of member organizations including the ACLU of Michigan, Safe & Just Michigan, Nation Outside: The Voice of Formerly Incarcerated People, the American Friends Service Committee, the National Association of Social Worker and the Detroit Justice Center will combine public education, litigation, and legislative awareness to highlight the harms of cash bail and advance evidence-based reforms.
